AP Gov. Blog # 10.

As we end our unit on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, I thought it would be a good idea to use this week’s blog as an opportunity to reflect on the struggle that many citizens have endured in order to be treated equally under the law. So for this week’s blog I would like for you to click on the links and answer the questions posted below:

  1. Describe the provisions outlined in both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Who benefits from these acts and in what ways?
  2. Identify a group that has faced discrimination in the past and, with an example, explain how the Supreme Court has at times allowed the restriction of the civil rights of minority groups and at other times has protected those rights (do not use the Brown decision).
  3. Can you think of any groups who still face discrimination? In what ways are they treated unfairly and what will it take to end this? Are there already laws in place to protect them?
