2025-2026 Currituck County Schools Student Parent Handbook

In order to provide continuing support for North Carolina’s youngest readers, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Early Learning has developed and released “Literacy at Home.” This digital resource provides literacy activities at each grade level, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Families and communities may access this resource for activities that specifically target the literacy skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and oral language. When children grow in each of these foundational areas they are well on their way to becoming proficient readers.

In the summer of 1997, the North Carolina General Assembly passed HB-1099, allowing early admission to Kindergarten of a child who has reached his/her fourth birthday by April 16 if the child demonstrates extraordinary academic ability and maturity. The state of North Carolina has created standards for the principal to use in determining if a child is appropriate for early entrance to kindergarten. North Carolina State Board policy outlines the criteria used to make the determination; Student Aptitude, Achievement, Performance, Observable Student Behavior/Student Interest and Motivation to Learn/Student Interest.

Early kindergarten entry should be right for the child. Most children benefit from one more year to develop, while a very few children are socially and developmentally mature enough to be in a structured school setting for a full school day. These children should display a thirst for knowledge consequently pushing their parents for new and challenging learning situations.

If after careful consideration, you decide that your child may be one of the very few to benefit then you will need to compile the necessary documentation. The legislation states, G.S. 115C-364 , that it is the parent's responsibility to present the required information, which includes arranging and paying for the required testing. From time to time, students encounter an exceptional opportunity for an experience of an educational nature. Under certain circumstances, the days devoted to these opportunities may count as excused absences by meeting the following criteria and with prior approval from the school principal: 

a) The opportunity is educational in nature. It must have a learning objective related to the student’s coursework or plan of study. 

b) The opportunity is grade-level and developmentally appropriate. 

c) The content of the experience must be highly relevant to the student. 

The school principal awards Educational Opportunity approvals on a case-by-case basis. Please contact your child's school principal to seek approval or for more information. 

*Please note that absences due to athletic competitions for non-school teams, family vacations, recreational trips, or travel (e.g., visits to theme parks, cruises, or other activities) do not qualify for approval as educational opportunities. 

The CCS Early Release Schedule is the same as our regular Friday Early Release Days, unless otherwise noted in messaging to families. 

Early Release Day Schedules are as follows:

• Elementary schools release at 11:30 a.m.
• Middle Schools and Currituck County High School release at 12:40 p.m.
• J.P. Knapp Early College High School releases at 12:30 p.m.

Due to a revised opening date for Tulls Creek Elementary School, updated attendance zones (from redistricting in 2024) will impact middle school families only in the upcoming 2025-2026 school year.

Approved Middle School Attendance Zone Map for the 2025-2026 School Year

The redistricting boundary lines established in 2024 for both middle schools remain in effect for the 2025-2026 school year. Families impacted by the new school's attendance zone will continue attending their current elementary schools until the new opening date. As the transition approaches, the district will provide additional information and support for families.
