    Title I & Reading Recovery

What is Title I? What is Reading Recovery?

Title I is the largest federal program for elementary and secondary schools. This program originated in 1965 as Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It was designed to provide assistance to children needing additional help in the area of reading.

Under Title I, first graders may receive a special program known as Reading Recovery. Reading Recovery is a short-term, supplemental intervention of one to one tutoring for first graders who struggle in the areas of reading and writing. It was developed in New Zealand over 20 years ago and it now operates in 49 states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Dependent Schools, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. It's main goal is to reduce the number of first graders that have difficulty learning to read and write.

    Parental Involvement

Mrs. Denby invites all parents who have children served in Title I to be a part of the process. Research indicates that when parents are involved in their children's education, the children benefit. Please feel free to contact her at any time to give input, ask questions or for resources that can help the children become stronger readers and writers.
Please feel free to contact her at (252) 232-2237 ext. 6008 or via e-mail .
