Mrs. Drab- Kindergarten
Hello Kindergarten Families!
My name is Stefanie Drab and I am so excited about teaching Kindergarten this school year. I have been an educator for the past fifteen years. Prior to working at SES, I worked in the Chesapeake Public School system for many years, where I taught 4th grade. I reside here in Currituck with my husband, three children and our German Shepherd. My husband is a professional firefighter for the city of Norfolk. My three children attend Currituck County Schools as well. My family loves to travel and spend time together.
I absolutely love teaching and am so excited to share this love of learning with your child this year. I am originally from upstate New York. I attended the State University of New York at Cortland, NY and received my Bachelor of Science in Childhood Education. This is my 7th year on the SES Kindergarten team. I love to read, run and go to the beach with my family. I am also a huge lover of coffee, peanut m&ms and Chick-Fil-A! I am thrilled to be your child's teacher this year and hope you know that I will love them dearly.
Daily Schedule Information:
We will have a daily 95-minute literacy block. During this time, students will work on phonics and reading using the Jan Richardson guided reading groups model, as well as Science of Reading alligned literacy center activities. The information presented to your child will strengthen reading skills and assist them in becoming lifelong learners. We love to read here in room 400!
The kindergarten team will be using the Currituck County math pacing guide & math cluster lessons provided by the North Carolina Department of Education to drive our math instruction this year. Our daily lessons will focus on the skills your child needs in order to become familiar with numbers and various math related skills (counting, adding, subtracting). Your child will be loving math this year!
Our Kindergarten team is excited to be using the Secret Stories Phonics program again this year. This program is a fun & educational approach to the "secret" reasons WHY letters get together and make the different sounds that they make! They offer logical explanations for letter sound behavior that students can remember and relate to too. Your child will be coming home each week excited to share a reading "secret" with you! We are also excited about using the Heggerty Phonics program this year as well. Students will be eager to show you the special hand motions they learn as we introduce them to phonics.
Your child will have specials every day. Our weekly newsletter will indicate what specials we have for the week. Be on the lookout each Monday for a newsletter in your child's binder. We will rotate between Music, Art, PE, STREAM and Library each week. Students will also go to the library weekly for a read aloud and book exchange. Please send your child to school each week with their library books. Readers are leaders in room 400!
I love teaching kindergarten & I am looking forward to helping your child develop a love for learning. Kindergarten is such an exciting year for both students and parents. You are going to be amazed to watch your child grow and learn this school year. Please feel free to email, call or Dojo message me with any questions or concerns you may have. I am looking forward to working with you & your amazing child this year. Together we will make this year a fantastic one!
