Welcome to Mrs. Barefield's 5th Grade Class
I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. This is my nineteenth year as an educator and my 5th year at Shawboro Elementary. I have a bachelors degree in Elementary and Special Education and a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I began my career in New Jersey and have taught both elementary and middle school general education, as well as exceptional children's education. I worked as an exceptional children's administrator prior to the military bringing us to Currituck County. I am a Coast Guard wife and a mother to two amazing children. When I am not at school you can find me at the beach with a good book or enjoying all the outdoors has to offer. Some of my favorite things are traveling, gardening, kayaking, and enjoying a good cup of coffee.
This year it is my goal to provide engaging instruction that challenges your child while fostering a sense of both independence and success. Every student is unique and has different interests and learning styles. My goal is for our classroom to be a community of learners based on mutual respect for all individual differences. I want both you and your child to know that our (not my) classroom is a safe environment where students are encouraged to share, learn from one another, and learn from me—just as I will learn from them.
I have very high expectations and standards. I am absolutely committed to providing my students with the best education. I believe structure and consistency is key. I also believe that communication with parents is crucial to a successful year, and that honest communication can head off issues before they develop. Know that I am here with an open mind and a willingness to listen to any concerns that might arise throughout the year. Please communicate with me your thoughts, questions and concerns. I am in your child's life every day; it's my goal to make a powerful and positive impact, so let's work together to make that happen. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at email@example.com,us or (252) 232-2237.
