• Read to Achieve

Since the start of kindergarten, our students have been learning the basics of reading, mathematics, science and social studies along with many other important life skills.  Teachers have encouraged them to be curious and engaged in learning new things.  All of this contributes to building a strong educational foundation that will assist in being successful students all through their school years and will prepare them to graduate career and college ready!

As part of the Read to Achieve legislation (G.S. §115C-83.1A) passed by the General Assembly in 2012 and taking effect in the 2013-14 school year, students in 3rd grade will be given a beginning-of-grade standardized test to establish a baseline measure of how he or she is reading.  At the he end of third grade, students will take end-of-grade tests in reading and in mathematics. These tests are one measure that informs you, your child’s teacher and the principal if your child has learned the basic skills that he or she needs in order to do well in fourth grade.

North Carolina state law now requires that third graders who are not reading at a proficient level on the end-of-grade test be given extra support. If a student does not score proficient on the end-of-grade test in reading at the end of third grade, there are several steps outlined in legislation that will be taken to ensure the proper assistance is provided.

Below you will find a narrated presentation that outlines the legislation and specific requirements for providing support for students who do not demonstrate reading proficiency.  Other links will be added as more information on the implementation of "Read to Achieve" in our district.
