About Me:

I completed my Masters Degree, Summa Cum Laude, in Secondary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment from Jones International University in May 2009. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Elizabeth City State University. I taught for 3 years at Pasquotank County High School, where I also coached Volleyball. I have taught Biology, Earth Science, Physical Science, Chemistry and Marine Biology. I am a member of the Beta Beta Beta National Honor Society and the Alpha Chi National Honor Society. I am also a Veteran of the United States Navy, having served 5 years (1989 - 1994) as a Cryptologic Technician Maintenance 2nd Class Petty Officer.

My husband, Scotty, works for LPI Technical Services, located in Chesapeake, VA.  He is the Vice President and Director of Operations and Business. Our daughter, Alyssa, is a student at the College of the Albemarle.
My husband also has 2 boys: Sean, a Dental student, and his wife, Becca, live in Charleston, SC and Kurt, a GM of a family restaurant, , and his two kids live in Greensboro, NC. Our grandkids, Hannah and Ethan, will be 7 this year and entering the first grade.
About Honors Biology:

The biology curriculum is designed to continue student investigations and deepen student understanding of the biological sciences. High school instruction should include concepts introduced in grades K-8 at a more abstract level.

In-depth study of the following concepts is included: the cell, the molecular basis of heredity, biological evolution, the interdependence of organisms, matter, energy and organization in living systems, and the adaptive responses of organisms.

*Students in Honors Biology will have assignments that reflect the inherent rigor of honors level courses. Included should be long-term projects or problem-based assignments that offer students the opportunity to directly apply Science at a more complex level.

 About Honors Marine Biology:

This course covers the physical and biological components of the marine environment. Topics include major habitats, the diversity of organisms, their biology and ecology, marine productivity, and the use of marine resources by humans. Upon completion, students should be able to identify various marine habitats and organisms and to demonstrate a knowledge of their biology and ecology.

*Students in Honors Marine Biology will have assignments that reflect the inherent rigor of honors level courses. Included should be long-term projects or problem-based assignments that offer students the opportunity to directly apply Science at a more complex level.

JP Knapp Forms Partnership with Phytoplankton Monitoring Network

The Honor's Marine Biology class at JP Knapp Early College has recently formed a partnership with the Phytoplankton Monitoring Network - a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The students, along with their teacher, Rhonda Britton, have joind a network across the country to help monitor Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in our waterways. Knapp will be taking phytoplankton samples from the Currituck Sound, identifying those phytoplankton and providing that information to NOAA.

The monitoring of HABs is important for several reasons. The HAB could cause health problems in the community, affect organisms living in the Sound and negatively affect our local commerical fisherman. By providing this service, the Marine class is taking a proactive step in helping NOAA identify possible HABs earlier - aiding them in their notification procedures to local and state governments.
